Another Superstar Gone Too Soon

Naomi Sims died Saturday in Newark. I was 10 years old when Naomi Sims became the first black model on the cover of Ladies’ Home Journal in November 1968. It was one of those infrequent occasions when pop culture was a topic of discussion and even pride in our household.

In my Black middle-class professional neighborhood outside of Richmond, Virginia, Sims was more evidence that Black was indeed beautiful and as a community we were on the move.

Sims, who is described as the first black supermodel went on to design successful collections of wigs and cosmetics for black women under her name she was 61.
